Spencer Levon’s musical journey began as a young boy at the age of 13 when he was invited to attend an underground warehouse party. As a child he listened to a lot of music but it was on this night that he would uncover the raw connection to rhythm and celebration through dance so instinctual and deeply rooted in all humankind.

Growing up in Salt Lake City, Utah didn’t exactly offer the best exposure to the worldwide dance music phenomenon that occurred in the late ‘80s and throughout the ‘90s. What did exist there was a tight knit, underground culture that would help nurture and cultivate Spencer’s newly found passion for dance music. In a short time Spencer befriended many of the promoters and deejays in the scene and soon began learning the art of deejaying himself. Having been exposed to all the popular dance music of the time including Techno, Trance, House and all the subgenres within, it was the early sounds of tech step Drum n Bass that caught his attention during his first visits to the record store. He’d leave the shop with early releases from the likes of Fabio, Grooverider, Goldie, Photek, Doc Scott, and others.

The hard, dark sounds of Drum n Bass, interesting as they were, soon evolved to a lighter shade when a good friend left a profound, musical influence on Spencer. Living in New York City during some of dance music’s most important years and hearing the likes of Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage and David Mancusso at his famous Loft parties, he possessed all of the key ingredients needed to give Spencer a solid foundation in dance music history. He introduced mixed tapes from Kerri Chandler, Tony Humphries, Francois K, Frankie Knuckles, and not forgetting all the artists that came before these great deejays including Salsoul Orchestra, Roy Ayers, First Choice, George Benson, Chaka Kahn, Curtis Mayfield, and so on.

Barely past his 18th birthday and playing under the alias EnMocean, Spencer began opening up for the now internationally acclaimed House music icon, Kaskade (who was playing atmospheric Drum n Bass under his real name, Ryan Raddon). Alongside a close friend, Spencer went on to open his own weekly event beginning with only a few friends and eventually piling in an over-capacity crowd every week…on a weeknight! In addition to promoting on a nightly basis and guest deejaying in several clubs and underground events, Spencer found time to put together his own production studio and begin remixing and producing.

In 2000, Spencer decided it was time to leave his familiar stomping grounds and he moved to Chicago. He spent the next four years cutting his teeth in the music industry working in Pro Audio sales where he taught himself about the music business and studio production. Living around the corner from the well-known Gramaphone Records in Chicago, Spencer began buying deep and soulful House tracks, then Classics and 70s Disco, and eventually diversifying his taste to Latin Jazz, African drumming, and anything else that might make one get up and dance. He began to realize that no matter how much Chicago had offered him there was only one place that would allow the next chapter of his life to unfold; New York City. He packed his bags and moved.

Today, as Spencer listens to greats like Danny Krivit at 718 Sessions, Timmy Regisford at Shelter, Joe Claussell at Love, and Francois K, Little Louie Vega, Kevin Hedge of Blaze play at Cielo, he’s more than confident that New York City is where he needs to be. Already being booked to play several events in the city and working on production and remix projects, there’s no doubt that New York has just inherited another up and coming player in the dance music industry.
